How to Prepare for a Breathwork Session

So you want to try breathwork! Or maybe you’ve tried it but want to know how to best prepare. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable.

Here are a few simple things you must know to be ready for the transformative experience of breathwork.

Set Up Your Space

Setting up your space can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like. The most important thing with space is that you choose a place where you will not be disturbed for the duration of the session. Sometimes getting disturbed is inevitable- like when your kid walks into the room and needs something- but not to worry, if it does happen it doesn’t ruin the experience.

It is best to find a comfortable place to lay down, like on a yoga mat, couch, or bed. I typically do breathwork on my bed but do enjoy using a yoga mat also.

Feel free to light a candle, burn some incense, or diffuse essential oils. Maybe you have a favorite crystal that you are working with and would like to hold during the session. I like to hold crystals during breathwork because it helps ground me. If you would like, you could have a glass of water or cup of tea nearby.

Getting Comfy

Be sure to wear light clothing and something you feel comfortable in. You do not want to wear clothing that feels constricting. It helps to have an eye mask to keep out extra light but is not entirely necessary.

It is helpful to have a blanket near-by because temperature fluctuations are common during a breathwork experience. I also just like the feeling of the weight of the blanket on my body.

Check Technology

If the session is online make sure to check that your computer or phone is charged and plugged in. Earbuds ensure you can hear the facilitator and the music loud and clear. If you are using your phone make sure you have a good place to prop it up.

No Food 2 Hours Before

Please do not eat in the 2 hours leading up to the session. If you eat too close to the session you may feel nauseous. You may have a light snack or water but it is best to refrain from eating prior to the session.

Give Yourself Some Time After

While I will give you time to come back into your space after the active breathing it is best to give yourself about 30 minutes to integrate. You may not want to rush off on an errand afterward and need some time to process. I like to take a bath or go on a walk after a breathwork session and make sure I have time for that after my sessions.

Be Open

Everyone has their own unique breathwork experience. It is important to stay open to the experience and listen to your body. You will get exactly what you need with each and every session.
